<u>Guest Speaker Series<\/u><\/em><\/h3>\n<p>On September 18<sup>th<\/sup> our guest speaker was Emily Wilcox, Business Development Officer for the Senior Resource Association (SRA).&nbsp; The SRA now handles all public transportation in Indian River County &#8211; both the <strong><em>Community Coach<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>GoLine.<\/em><\/strong> There is door to door transportation anywhere in the county.<\/p>\n<p>The SRA operates two adult daycare facilities which are open Monday-Friday and are staffed with certified RNs, LPNs, and CNAs.&nbsp; Seniors receive a nutritional meal at lunch, play mentally stimulating games, participate in arts, music, and physical fitness to stay engaged, and socialize with others.&nbsp; There also have recreational outings to the public library and to the Vero Beach Museum for Art.&nbsp; A caregiver support group is also offered.&nbsp; In home services include housekeeping, shopping, meal planning, etc.&nbsp; The SRA also has a public guardianship program for incapacitated clients who have no family or friends.&nbsp; This program is funded through the Department of Elder Affairs and donations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Silver Tones is an auditioning senior choir that receives donations for their performances.<\/p>\n<p>Meals on Wheels delivers to households and Emergency Meals on Wheels delivers to those just out of the hospital.&nbsp; Volunteers are trained to observe and monitor clients and how to respond when needed.&nbsp; There is also a Pet Meals on Wheels in partnership with the <strong><em>Humane Society<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>For the Love of Paws.<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp; Pets owned by shut-in clients are taken for annual check-ups, grooming, inoculations, etc.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Volunteers are needed and go through an extensive background check, training, and orientation.&nbsp; For more information contact <u>SeniorResourceAssociation.org<\/u>.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<h3>River Cruise<\/h3>\n<p>On September 25<sup>th<\/sup> we enjoyed a boat outing aboard the River King.&nbsp; Captain Jim and 1<sup>st<\/sup> Mate Scott treated us to a cruise on the Indian River to the Sebastian Inlet.&nbsp; The River King goes out 2-3 times a day and in October will start to Pelican Island the first United States Wildlife Sanctuary.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There was lots of wildlife to observe, a tasty box lunch served by our waitress Lisa and lots of camaraderie and socialization with members and guests.&nbsp; Secretary and&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>SCJHS Principal William Dodds, Assistant Principal Chet Devarney, and Advisors Tammy Cruz <\/strong>and<strong> Skye Devarney <\/strong>are very supportive of this club. Meetings began on Wednesday, August 21<sup>st<\/sup> with elections of officers and distribution of school supplies to families in need.&nbsp; (Pillar \u2013 Youth) Meetings will continue the 1<sup>st<\/sup> Wednesday of each month thereafter. We have 27 registered members so far!&nbsp; Our September meeting was rescheduled due to Hurricane Dorian.&nbsp; At our make-up meeting on September 17<sup>th,<\/sup> we viewed Roberts Rules of Order Video provided by Ms. Cruz and packaged child abuse prevention flyers for distribution to all homeroom classes. (Pillar \u2013 Prevention of Child Abuse).&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Mrs. Devarney also informed us that Jr Excel President Matthew Acosta represented our school very well at a recent IRSD meeting.&nbsp; Students were selected to attend and give their input on the characteristics they would look for in the next superintendent. &nbsp;Congratulations, Matthew on representing SCJHS well! <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On October 2nd we will be installing all new members and planning a fall drive for collection of food or other household items for a worthy cause.&nbsp; (Pillar &#8211; Community) Terry Gardner has also agreed to assist with meetings. &nbsp;&nbsp;If you are interested in helping with this Junior Excel Program please contact Bill Middleton, Kathy Burns or Margie Duffell.<\/p>\n<h3>News<\/h3>\n<p>Meetings will be held the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> and 4<sup>th<\/sup> Tuesdays of each month.&nbsp; <strong>School Advisor Jaime Sturgeon\u2019s<\/strong> enthusiasm is infectious! We received 4 new applications after the all club rush earlier in the month and now have 34 registered members so far! Club members are working with other SRHS Clubs in conjunction with SRMS for aid to a K-12 School in Grand Cay, Bahamas. (Pillars &#8211; Community and Youth).&nbsp; Supplies are being sent directly to the \u201cadopted school\u201d on the island by barge.
